Game Fair in Madrid

It is not always easy to distinguish the fine line between a healthy recreational activity and the known pathological extreme in a gambling addict. A psychological dependence that affects a large number of game lovers: Gambling, the excitement generated by challenging chance. Gambling is one of the oldest activities known to mankind and it has existed in all times and all cultures, fulfilling its function sometimes hidden as it is not well accepted in society and normally played in different ways at different times and cultures. But, of course, the attraction to the game, chance and the danger that this mix brings, seems to be a feature built into the nature of man, which seeks to address boredom by constantly looking for risks.

game fair madrid

Surely you remember the novel “The Gambler”, one of the most successful works of Fyodor Dostoevsky, centered on the theme of gambling. In its pages, the great Russian writer wondered “why should gambling will be worse than any other means of procuring money?” And added “One thing is certain: Of a hundred only one wins. But that, what do I care? “. Actually, we should clarify that the percentage of those who play with the intention of making money is minimal, the sector, in fact, is mostly maintained by those who bet for fun and without seeking a second purpose beyond personal pleasure . However, especially with the spreading of games and gambling on the Internet, has contributed largely to the development of forms of psychological dependence around recreation. An important example in this sense, is the game of on-line poker, especially in the U.S., where it is creating a huge virtual market and a growing addictive disease at the same speed.

The city of Madrid has joined this trend by proposing Fer-Interazar (http://www.ferinterazar.com), which this year marks its 32nd edition, showing the continued interest that recreational activities generate. Fer-Interazar will take place on the 28, 29 and March 30 in Hall 7 of the Trade Fair Juan Carlos I IFEMA. With more than 16,000 square meters of exhibition space, this event is proposed as an international meeting point for companies engaged in software design, services, manufacturers of equipment for amusement parks, casinos and amusement arcades, with the primary objective to generate business opportunities and expand the existing market. In the previous edition, Fer-Interazar had 157 companies (23 foreign) and almost 20,000 visitors.

Visiting hours are from 11:30 to 20:00 on the 28th from 10:00 to 20:00 on the 29th and from 10:00 to 15:00 on the 30th. Pro visitors can get a free accreditation by submitting required documentation, and is off limits to those under 16 years.

Expo Marc Chagall in Madrid

This year, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is celebrating its 20th anniversary years. And they will celebrate it, with what they are better at: exhibitions. Among others, the Museum organized a retrospective, in tandem with the Fundación Caja Madrid on the Belarusian painter Marc Chagall that can be seen until the 20th of May.

marc chagall madrid

Jean-Louis Prat is the curator of this large exhibition, which value is even greater because of the fact that it is the first of its kind to be held on Chagall in Spain. The first part, entitled “The Way of Poetry”, ranging from the beginning of his career to World War II, can be seen at the Museo Thyssen. The second, entitled “The great game of color” is exhibited at the Fundación Caja Madrid and picks up his American stage and its evolution as an artist.

Chagall was born in the ancient Belarusian city of Vitebsk in 1887. This, together with his Jewish roots, were two key aspects that were present throughout his life and work. Many of his paintings are inspirations of the customs of his land, as the poet lying (1915), the village and I (1911) and The joy of the Village (1957).

Mystical and spiritual, Chagall was always fascinated by the Bible, which he read from his youth. Crucifixion paintings as white (1938), Adam and Eve expelled from Paradise (1967) or the number of the Song of Songs are a true reflection of this. This aspect is covered at the National Biblical Message Museum in Nice, which is dedicated to the painter, whose theme is this: describe different passages of the Old Testament.

He died at 97, leaving his very extensive legacy. And not just talking about his painting, but also made beautiful Chagall stained glass and mosaics, and was an illustrator of novels and short stories are known, his illustrations of the famous fables of La Fontaine, recently rescued from oblivion. Thanks to The Ant and the Grasshopper story, Chagall learned French and marked the starting point in the use of color in his work. He was also a potter, sculptor, poet and theatrical set designer. In fact, his paintings are pure poetry and full of optimism.

After a leavening St. Petersburg, where he studied art, he went to Paris to get in touch with new trends in art, but not submit to them. He returned to his hometown in 1914 to marry and there the Great War surprised him. He participated in the Bolshevik Revolution of 17, which ended disenchanted. In the twenties returns to Paris and remain there until the outbreak of World War II when the Nazi occupation of France forced him into exile in the U.S.. States. (Period from 1941 to 1948). After the war returned to France, where he lived until his death in Saint-Paul de Vence, Nice, 1985.

From the mind of Carlos Atanes, “The man with the whipped cream gun”, comes to the Cervantes Theatre Hall, an innovative and entertaining tragicomedy full of enriched dilemmas, problems, ideas, and frustrations that the author himself suffers during the play. The main point of the plot however, is the discovery that the main character makes, seeing that the dazzling thoughts that arise from his mind, are not within his head, but in the very air he breaths. A controversial theatrical reflection, which not only tries to entertain a unique and demanding audience, but also show that the moral of the play is not to only expose good thoughts, but actually make them happen

Author, Carlos Atanes, is a renowned filmmaker and a writer of different genres and styles. ‘Da Vinci, the genius’ exhibition in Madrid

Today, saying ‘Leonardo’ is saying more than a name, it’s almost an adjective to designate a versatile person who knows just as much about art and literature as science, engineering or architecture. And all of that thanks to him, Leonardo da Vinci, the Renaissance man by definition.

da-vinci-genius-exhibition-madrid

The author of ‘The Last Supper’ or ‘La Gioconda’ didn’t just paint, he was also a sculptor, an engineer, an architect, an anatomist, a botanic, a philosopher and a student of nature and animals. He designed inventions to the point of being the precursor of machines such as the parachute, the propellor -which would be the base of the future helicopter- or the submarine among many others.

And it’s precisely this lesser known side of Leonardo that’s inspired this exhibition, ‘Da Vinci, the genius’, which Canal de Isabel II (Paseo de la Castellana 214) in Madrid exhibits until the 2nd of May. To carry out this project, they’ve needed the collaboration of over 20 institutions as well as various museums, both national and international, thanks to which we can see works previously unseen in Spain.

THe exhibition is divided in two different spaces. One of them, the most intimate, holds the library with documents and reproductions of manuscripts and incunables and it also recreates Leonardo’s studio (studiolo). The other is dedicated to painting, where you can see a copy of ‘The Last Supper’ by Giampetrino, one of his most famous students, as well as original paintings by other pupils.

You can also see replicas of machines designed by the artist, some of them manipulated by the assistants, as well as a digitally scanned portrait of ‘La Gioconda’, where you can appreciate all the tiniest details unseen up to today. The audiovisual part has special importance in the exhibition. On one hand, the atmosphere sound that surrounds the different spaces, with an exclusive composition, and then a 3D cinema where they show the film ‘Leonardo da Vinci. The view of a genius’.

And if this wasn’t enough, the visitor can sample a selection of dishes created for the occasion by Sergi Arola, inspired in the character and his times, at the ‘Gastronomical Corner’, a new space that won’t leave anyone indifferent.

For those who attend the exhibition with children, the exhibition offers four children’s workshops for free, with subjects such as anatomy, the construction of a periscope, a giant puzzle of ‘The Last Supper’ and even the construction of a catapult.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was called like that because it was in the small town close to Florence, Vinci, where he was born. He was the illegitimate son of Messer Piero Fruosino di Antonio, a rich aristocrat who took him in like a son but of who he didn’t inherit anything from. His multidisciplinary education is thanks to Andrea del Verrocchio, in whose prestigious workshop he started as an apprentice. He was contemporary of Michelangelo, his eternal rival.

Recently, ‘La Gioconda’ has found in the Museo del Prado a replica painted most probably by his disciples Francesco Melzi or Andrea Salai, whose state of preservation is better than the original, since it’s recently been restored.

Where to eat Cocido Madrileño

The ‘cocido madrileño’ is a dish that is part of Madrid’s ancestral culture. Its scent of home cooking has transformed it into a local emblem that’s present in every household and restaurant. So that you can get to know what ‘cocido madrileño’ is, its origin and where to eat it if you’re on holiday or on a business trip to Madrid, here are some tips.

cocido madrileño madrid

Born in the lower class households, because it’s prepared with a bit of everything and it was served to survive the hard winters and receive spring, which brought fresh vegetables, the ‘cocido’ transformed into a dish that reflected the simple austere past in Spain. Despite having started as an only dish in restaurants for workers, its flavour and tasty smell transformed it into the typical dish of Madrid, which today is served in international-class restaurants.

Just as its name indicates in Spanish, it’s a stew with chick peas that goes with vegetables, meats and pork. The preparation begins the day before with soaking the chick peaks. The cooking as such begins with the preparation of the broth that has bones, meat and Spanish ham. When the broth is warm, they add the chick peas and the black sausage. While all of that is cooking, they prepare the ‘pelota’, which is a ball made with stale bread crumbs, garlic powder, chopped parsley, eggs, salt and black pepper; with that they prepare the little balls that are added at the end of the cooking to the dish.

As you can see, it’s a single dish, because its components make it strong and nutritious enough to satisfy the hunger. The dish is served in three plates or vuelcos: in the first we have the soup in the second the vegetables and the chick peas and in the third -called the viandas- the meats and the pelota. Today, in restaurants, it’s served in two vuelcos: the soup and the meat, vegetables, chick peas and pelota.

If you want to eat cocido madrileño we suggest going to the restaurant La Bola, that prepares this dish like if it was made at home. This restaurant was founded in 1870 and they serve the ‘cocido’ in a clay dish to preserve the unique taste, the flavour and the aesthetics. We can find it at Calle La Bola 5.

The restaurant Casa Carola is another of the best places to eat this dish. It’s an authentic place with plenty of charm and good food, especially ‘cocido madrileño’, because it has the best preparation of it with first-class fresh products. The cost per person is of 29€ and it includes dessert, coffee and a shot of the house liqueur. Its two restaurants are located on Padilla 54 and on Víctor Andrés Belaunde 6.

Pub Crawling in Madrid

The first person I saw with a stamped red shirt was a blonde girl who was smoking a cigarette near the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. She was giving flyers to anybody who looks like a tourist and asked.

pub crawling madrid

-Would you like to come to Pub Crawl?, she always asked this in English.

That night I was out alone and was eager to grab a beer and listen to some music. I recognized the blonde girl because it was not the first time I saw her on the street. When I approached, she asked me if I wanted to join the party. I said yes.

Pub-crawls or bar-crawls were invented in Anglo-Saxon countries like England, America or Australia. These bars basically offer night Tourism, in which a guide, instead of taking visitors to museums, leads them to party. The company that first started doing this kind of night tours in Madrid is called Madride, a company where the blonde girl, Alina works.

-It all started when we were working in a hostel, Gary Toomey, the Irish founder of the company said. We used to take tourists to party and one day we though we could charge for this service.

Madride’s night tour costs 15 Euros and the price includes a free shot at each location. Alina no longer works as a guide because one day she decided to go back to her native Germany. Her substitute is Hector, a nice Mexican likes to party as much or even more than Alina. The meeting point is at the Puerta del Sol, in the heart of Madrid. Usually the meeting time is at 23:00, but most of the times the tour starts a little bit latter. When all the night owls are gathered the journey begins. Depending on the season, there can be more or less people. The largest Pub Crawl in history took place in Australia where in 2009 a party tour with more than 4 thousand people hit the streets.

The idea of these kind of tours, is to drink and dance until it is no possible to move anymore. Hence the origin of the name “crawling. The following bars are usually always playing music for you to dance and enjoy an international environment.

Fernando is another Mexican night guide, who along with Gary, founded Madride.

-What makes us unique is that we also become part of the party, says Fernando before going salsa dancing with a group of clients to a local recognized Latin music disco. Then he wryly added: -. The dance classes are included in the price.

Bruce Labruce in Madrid

The photographic exhibit of the Canadian transgressor filmmaker and photographer Bruce LaBruce, which is part of a photo casting for his next film, “Holy, the obscene” to begin being filmed in March in Madrid and in the desert of Almeria will not leave anyone indifferent for Labruce once takes a step beyond with his criticism of sacred and secular stereotypes constructed by on one hand religion and by the media on the other.
exhibition bruce labruce madrid
Labruce, whose real name is Justin Stewart, was born in Southampton, Ontario, Canada. At 18 he moves to Toronto to study film. From his earliest years of study he begins to work in music magazines related to underground cultures and creates his own fanzine where his criticism of the stylized imaginary and stigmatizing of homosexuality in film and media, especially in porn industry is brutal. Since his first film, what might be called a critical porn stereotype imposed by the culture industry, an “underground porno” with a high content of humor, where Bruce himself is an actor and experimentw with different techniques and looks Labruce never ceases to surprise .

The photographic exhibition which opens on Feb. 16 at The Fresh Gallery in Madrid is perhaps easier on the viewer who is accustomed to his work, but not for the common viewer, for he mixes elements of Catholic religious imagery with an fetish sado-masochistic imaginary, a style resulting in 60 bold photographs that will surely cause some degree of controversy, more so because the models are well-known figures of the Spanish artistic world, including well known actors and singers. One that stands out is the famous singer and TV star Alaska.

so now you know, from February 16 to April 4, this is an excellent opportunity to see the work of this renowned artist, an exposition that is FREE to visit

Latre Carlos in Madrid

The actor, comedian and showman Carlos Latre returns to the stage to star in the second installment of his show “Yes, We Spain”, on this occasion it will be “Yes, We Spain is Different”. A hilarious performance you can not miss if you enjoyed the first part of the comedy. This time with the change of government, Mariano Rajoy, the new president, arrives at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid to take up his new post, but soon finds out something terrible. Before leaving his post as president, his predecessor, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has sold the country and all its inhabitants to the Germans to get out of the crisis. The contract will be valid in only a few days and Rajoy must hurry if he wants to avoid such a mess. The newly elected president come up with the idea of seeking assistance from his North American counterpart Barack Obama, in order to achieve international cooperation and escape the German occupation. Although his beginnings in show business go back further, the popularity of Carlos Latre arrived with his participation in the Martian Chronicles directed by Javier Sarda. TV amplified his talent as a comedian and as an actor it led him to bigger challenges. With “Yes, We Spain” he proved he was prepared to assume the representation, management and interpretation of a comical national characterized play. “Yes, We Spain is Different” is the confirmation of that artistic maturity and does not rule out the possibility of more sequels in this saga.
